This April LVDI International awarded a second microgrant to the GEM women (see post GEM – The New Jewel of Maromizaha) to help hone their skills as doll makers. Now numbering 66, the women have made great strides not only in their sewing skills but also in their management abilities. They are committed to producing quality handmade dolls and developing a sustainable business model. At their last meeting the women discussed how to increase efficiency, improve quality and design, and market their unique products. The group even voted on how to reinvest a portion of their sales revenue to purchase raw materials for making more dolls.
No longer a group of farmers, charcoal makers and stone breakers, now the GEM women radiate confidence as they embrace their new career. Determined on becoming successful artisans and business women, they are truly diamonds in the rough.
You can further their success. Please become a GEM supporter and help us protect the Maromizaha forest!
